”Hello, are you out there?”
With this simple line Dominic Harrison a.k.a Yungblud introduce us to a complete new era with his brand new album ”Idols”. And maybe he is right wondering if we are still there. Since it has been 3 years since his self titled album was released. It took him 4 years to complete this project because he called this: ”A project with no limitations. A love letter to self-reclamation, to rock music and to life; in all it’s fucking madness.”
”Idols” released on the 20th of June and is serving as a first part of a two-part project.
Starting this album with the longest song on the record. ”Hello Heaven, Hello” is 9 minutes long and has 3 phases. The first part starts as a popsong and is all about the insecurity of finding who you are and who will be there once you do.
After the second chorus we enter the second part of the song, which is more rock. His voice is way more angrier and he screams and growls more. You can feel the anger he has about being bullied in his childhood and the fact he didn’t fit into the group. We have a change in the chorus. He sings this time about being in heaven but first you have to get to hell and back. We have a guitar solo during this part and after the third chorus of this part we switch to the third and final part. Which has a instrumental part first and then Yungblud singing about spending the days saying hello and exaclty seeing us for who we are or maybe even him seeing himself for who he is.
We have a talking outro in the end. And after 9 minutes and 6 seconds we have finished listening to this masterpiece in which he introduces himself as his real self.
During the whole song we sometimes hear some violins. The London Philmaronic Orchestra plays a huge part on this whole album.
For the fans who know Yungblud a little longer and feared he dropped his old roots and habits. No worries, ”Lovesick Lullaby” got you covered. It reminds me of ”King Charles” and has the style of ”21st Century Liability” combined with ”Weird!” I think this song will be a good one for live crowds and I can’t wait till I get to hear it live this fall.
What kind of a talent do you have when one song can have multiple meanings? ”Zombie” is that kind of song. First serving as the ultimate powerballad about the fear of being a burden, asking for help, being seen as weak or ugly. He wrote this song about his grandmother who changed into a completely different person while dealing with serious injury and trauma. But make a videoclip with the beautiful and very talented Florence Pugh and you made the song into a love letter to nurses. These people work day and night, having to deal with the huge amount of pressures and heavy emotions, while putting away their feelings and emotions in order to help others. Whether you are a nurse, or someone dealing with mental health struggles. ”Zombie” will probably make you cry, or at least a little teary.
Are you even British, if The Beatles haven’t inspired you at least one song?
”Change” reminds me so much of ”Yesterday” by The Beatles. Fun fact, if the album wasn’t called ”Idols”, it would have been called ”Change”. Because Yungblud sees this album as the biggest transition point of his life. The London Philharmonic Orchestra plays a huge part in this song and I understand it when people don’t feel like this song should be on a rock album. By the end of the song we get the heavy guitar riffs, so no worries.
Britpop was a music style very famous during the 1990’s. It produces catchy alternative rock combined with British guitar pop from the 1960’s and 1970’s. One of the most famous bands making Britpop are Oasis and Coldplay. ”Ghosts” has the Coldplay style. The instrumental parts are very melodic and easy to remember. During halfway the song we get to hear the Orchestra again combined with the band from Yungblud. Yungblud shows his scream skills near the end of the song. The rest of the song we hear his beautiful singing voice. Normally we are used to hear him screaming and rapping. But this song we hear him exactly singing.
”War” starts with a very melodic intro, which quickly change into something bombastic. Yungblud sings with a very raspy voice while during the chorus he let’s himself go. ”War” is another power rock ballad and describes the pain of people trying to dim your light. Yungblud being diagnosed with ADHD, he always got told to not be too much of this, or too much of that. He simply can’t be anything else then what he is.
And with that all I can say about ”Idols” is that it is a journey. A journey of self discovering, turning inwards and try to figure out who you truly are. The second part of this journey will be released later this year. And I think that part will surprises us again. Maybe some people will be disappointed about this album being so much different than the previous album. But I think that is what makes Yungblud, Yungblud.
