After their album release party at Wacken Open Air, it is now time for the Dark Legacy Tour by the Swedish metal band Mister Misery and surprise surprise, they were playing on Halloween at the Patronaat in Haarlem.
Making our way to the show a bit earlier to get a nice place up in the front row, so we could sing along with the songs we came to like and love since the interview and review of the album “Mister Misery”.
Opener of the show was the Dutch band Ilaender all the way from Enschede. A newly formed band since January 2024, with Deftones as their inspiration. Playing with a lot of enthusiasm they performed nine songs, some of their debut album “Alpha”, which was released on the 19th of October. A bit of a pity that the vocals were drowned out by bass and the guitar, both of the instruments were very loud, and you couldn’t hear any of the lyrics the singer was singing. However, that didn’t stop the band from performing and having fun on stage. Even so much fun that the singer ripped his jeans (as he told the crowd). Since the band is new to performing you could notice the lack of experience. There wasn’t much contact with the audience during the songs. But I really have hope for this new band that they will improve them self because they really know how to rock.
After a quick change of instruments and even adding some microphones covered in vines and snakes, it is time for the best Halloween experience in my opinion. Coming out in full ghost make up, the band entered the stage with some doll like movements. Starting off with the first song of the new album “Root of all evil” the band plays full of passion and the crowd goes wild. Playing songs from their entire discography this night was sure to be amazing. “Survival of the Sickest” really broke down the db limit of the Patronaat. Everyone sang from the top of their lungs with every line of that new banger. “The doomsday clock”, a song they were somehow nervous about to play live, felt like a ballad and gave the people a little break between the heavy songs. They really surprised me with the amount of energy they have when performing live. Mister Misery knows what the audience likes and fan favourite “My Ghost” felt like a karaoke experience since the crowd knew every lyric to the song. “Legion” and “Ripper” were so full of energy in these live versions, that they really grew on me in the terms of favourite songs. We have to give the drummer Rizzy some massive compliments: during the whole show he stayed in his ”doll character” using movements and expressions. But when he had to play the drums, he definitely released his inner animal and played the drums like there was no tomorrow. The creepy music from a music box while the band all start mimicking and moving like puppets before starting “Crooked Man” gave a really spooky, but amazing vibe; not the mention the eruptions of cheers and scream when they came back with an epic encore of favourites and hits. “Mister Hyde”, “Strangelands” and “Ballad of the Headless Horseman” ended the evening with a high note and left everyone satisfied the roam the halls of the Patronaat in search of merch and ghosts.
Overall, this was an amazing Halloween night with the perfect band to celebrate it with. Mistery Misery came out of the gate looking for nothing but destruction and shook the venue to their core. Some people in the crowd even took the time to come in complete costumes or even face paint that matched the band’s face paint. For me it was just the simple shirt they asked me to wear when I was doing the interview with them. The atmosphere, the stage presence, stage setup and the crowd made this an unbelievable show. We can’t wait for them to haunt the venues again or hopefully most of the summer festivals. This is a band you should definitely see live because it’s worth every penny.
After the show, the whole band took a little while to fresh themselves up. But they came back for all the fans with some fresh outfits and new ghost make up. Every fan got his/hers/their little moment to have a chat with the band, signed some cd’s or other items and was able to have a picture with them.
Save to say that this concert was the best Halloween experience you could have, and this band deserved a sold out concert. So, you know what to do next time they announce a concert. Better be there.
