In the world of hard rock, standing out is a challenge. For new bands, the temptation to polish their sound to the point of losing their raw edge is a common pitfall. Painted Scars, a fresh face in the scene hailing from Erpe-Mere, Belgium, walks this tightrope with their debut EP, “Kintsugi”. The result is a well-produced, high-energy release that, while designed to be radio-friendly, retains just enough of the band’s raw aggression to appeal to rock and metal fans alike.
Painted Scars burst onto the scene in April 2023, and within months, they were already making waves with their first single, “Life and Alive.” The band’s rapid rise is a testament to their undeniable energy and the infectious nature of their music. The six tracks on “Kintsugi” showcase a band that knows how to craft catchy, anthemic songs, but there’s a tension here—between the polished production and the raw power that lies beneath.
The EP opens with “Glow In The Dark,” a track that kicks off with a scream from vocalist Jassy ‘Hyacien’ Blue that immediately grabs your attention. The twin guitars of Kevin De Brauwer and Yannick Rottiers kick in, driving the track forward with pounding riffs and a powerful energy that’s impossible to ignore. There’s a slightly snotty edge to Jassy’s voice that gives the track a bit of a punk feel, adding to the EP’s appeal.
“Won’t Give Up” follows, a track inspired by Jassy’s own struggles with Cystic Fibrosis. The song’s message of defiance and perseverance is palpable, and the driving drums of Bram Vermeir push the band to new heights. The track is both uplifting and aggressive, a perfect example of how Painted Scars manages to balance their radio-friendly aspirations with their raw, hard-hitting roots.
As the EP progresses, tracks like “Knock Knock” and “Liquid Gold” continue to showcase the band’s ability to craft memorable songs. “Liquid Gold,” in particular, stands out as a feel-good anthem about partying with friends, its title a nod to Belgium’s beloved beer. The song’s high-speed riffs and catchy chorus make it a standout track that’s sure to be a hit at live shows.
“Freedom” captures the essence of defiance and self-empowerment, urging listeners to live life on their own terms. The rapid tempo and powerful vocals make it an unforgettable anthem of independence, further highlighting Painted Scars’ ability to craft songs that resonate on both a personal and communal level.
The EP closes with “Life and Alive,” a rhythmic power metal track that leaves a lasting impression. The song’s insane riff storm and strong bass line from Jens Van Geel round off the EP on a high note, ensuring that listeners are left wanting more.
Overall, “Kintsugi” is a strong debut from Painted Scars. While the radio-friendly production might put them at risk of blending in with other similar-sounding bands, the EP’s raw energy and aggression keep them from falling into obscurity. This is a band with potential, and with the right balance of polish and edge, they could be one to watch in the hard rock and metal scene.
