Nunslaughter – Satanic Chaos Legions

Nunslaughter is one of those bands that seems to have been around forever and, at the same time, never really changed itself to appease anyone. Basically, what you heard from these Americans in the ’90s is pretty much what you’ll hear today.
That is, if you could even keep up with the sheer volume of releases they’ve put out over the years. I’m guessing there are a few maniacs out there who own at least a decent chunk of that catalog, but I could never keep pace with the mountain of demos, splits, EPs, compilations, and live albums.
Eventually, I settled on sticking to the full-lengths, and those have proven just as consistent as the band’s musical direction, not only in quality, but also in the steady stream of releases they’ve dropped every few years.

Don of the Dead (the last remaining founding member) and his gang return with this release five years after their previous effort, and it doesn’t disappoint. In true, natural Nunslaughter fashion, the songs are relatively short, averaging around the 2:45 mark, yet every second of every track slaps the color clean out of the listener’s cheeks.
Starting with the title track, it’s immediately clear the band has unleashed a menacing record. The drums attack relentlessly, while the guitars constantly shift between savage melodies and shameless ’80s worship. The second and third track, “Jesus Fucking Dies” and “Unsacrament“, are basically everything the band stands for. Fast as fuck, evil as hell, and singing about how Jesus is their best buddy and religion is a wonderful thing… not.
Thrashing guitars collide with hammering double bass, while Don’s deadly growls tear through the mix. A shouted anti-religious manifesto in a world full of suck-ups.

The assault continues with “Die Your Own Death”, which shines a brighter light on the band’s rhythm section. The thicker strings are given a place of honor for a few moments as the song repeatedly builds itself up, accelerating each time until it’s on the verge of detonating before crashing headfirst into “Rotten Messiah“, which keeps snorting the same devilish line of speed metal off the tray.
That same tray is smeared with blood, pus, and somehow vomit, and tracks like “Lucifer the Light” and “Cathedral of Stench” showcase the somewhat slower-paced side of the Cleveland-hailing group, at least in parts. The band revisits this style now and again, and I don’t mean that as criticism. Quite the opposite. Nunslaughter keeps its songwriting chained to what defines its flesh. Their raw, unapologetic, drilling old-school death metal reaches a peak with frenzies such as “Listen to the Lies” and “The Spear of Satan“, two absolute neck-breaking weapons that would send heads flying in a live setting.

Some people always need change. Something new. Something fresh. Half the time, that mindset ends with a band completely reinventing itself and losing what made it special in the first place.
This new album isn’t doing anything I haven’t heard before from these veteran Americans. They’re staying true to themselves, their music, and the ideals they channel through it. I don’t need them to change anytime soon, and “Satanic Chaos Legions” is proof of that.
