Killerkorp – “Vices”

If there’s one thing you can say about Killerkorp, it’s that they don’t waste time messing around. This EP, “Vices,” serves as a stark reminder that the band knows exactly what they’re doing, and they’re not afraid to deliver their sonic punishment in its rawest, most ferocious form. With a reputation for combining relentless brutality and classic metal sensibilities, Killerkorp has crafted an EP that is both dark and exhilarating, showcasing not only their mastery of the genre but their willingness to push boundaries and try new things.

“Vices” kicks off with an eerie introduction that builds anticipation, before hitting the listener with a roar that feels like a punch to the gut. The title track, “Vices,” sets the stage with a groove-laden assault of riffs and aggression, immediately locking you into the relentless ride. Just when you think you know what to expect, the band throws in a spoken-word section midway through the track which is an unexpected but effective twist. This isn’t something we’ve typically heard from Killerkorp before, and it’s refreshing to see them experiment and evolve within their sound. The result? A track that’s unpredictable and feral, a perfect encapsulation of what this band stands for.

The mayhem continues with “Last Gasp” and “Scathed” which are two tracks that follow a formula of sheer sonic ferocity. These songs are riffs incarnate. The guitar work here is an absolute feast, combining groove, aggression, and a touch of sinister melody. Despite the EP’s dark and punishing themes, these tracks are a genuine pleasure to listen to, as they strike a balance between chaos and calculated precision. There’s a confidence in these songs that speaks volumes about Killerkorp’s experience. These aren’t just songs; they’re future live staples, primed to ignite mosh pits and fuel frenzied headbanging sessions.

Then there’s “Weak,” the final track of the EP and what a closer it is! It opens deceptively slow, almost lulling you into a false sense of security. But don’t be fooled. The song gradually builds, layer by layer, until it erupts into sheer, unhinged mayhem. The tension and release in this track are masterfully executed, proving that Killerkorp knows how to manipulate dynamics to devastating effect. It’s a brilliant way to close out the EP, leaving the listener breathless and wanting more.

One of the standout aspects of “Vices” is its production. It’s imperfect, and that’s what makes it perfect. This is what metal should sound like: raw, gritty, and unfiltered. There are no glossy effects or overly clean mixes here. Instead, Killerkorp delivers a sound that harks back to the late ‘90s, channelling the rough-and-tumble raw energy of early Amon Amarth or Slipknot. The imperfections add character, giving the EP a visceral, almost live-recording feel. It’s honest, unpolished metal, and it shines because of it.

In summary, “Vices” is a testament to Killerkorp’s ability to balance relentless aggression with thoughtful experimentation. The band’s willingness to try new elements, like the spoken-word section in “Vices,” shows growth and ambition. The riffs are plentiful, the energy is infectious, and the production is gloriously raw. If you see these guys on a show lineup, don’t hesitate, just go. You won’t be disappointed. This EP is pure, unfiltered metal mayhem, and it demands to be experienced.
