Hagetisse – To whither beneath thy Radiance (cassette)

Sometimes, just sometimes, reviewing is really rewarding. Especially when you get a physical copy of releases, and of course, when it concerns highly entertaining records.

Void Wander Productions manages to fulfill both. A short while ago I saw a package in my postbox containing one compact disc and three tapes (once again, many thanks Ward!). I’ve once again decided to give these underground releases a proper review giving them some “exposure”.

This time it concerns Hagetisse which released a cassette on this illustrious label a few weeks ago. It’s already their eight output but they have been operating under my radar. Well…”they” isn’t the right pronunciation because it is on of the many projects of Mories. If you are a connoisseur of underground and extreme music this name must not be new to you. It is simply unhuman how many projects this guy has in his stable of musical endeavors. From Industrial/Noise in the form of Gnaw Their Tongues, the more symphonic Black Metal of Grand Celestial Nightmare or the raw ambient Black Metal of Dodenbezweerder, this man oozes dark music, and in general the quantity of releases does not affect the quality.

With Hagetisse our Frisian friend is in optimum form. “To whither beneath thy Radiance”, albeit a short adventure of approx. 32 minutes, is both aggressive yet melodic and ridden with keyboards. The keyboards are mixed on the background giving it an extra gloomy touch. It reminds me a bit of a toned down Obtained Enslavement which means it has a bombastic, symphonic approach which oozes despair, misery and death. There’s definitely a 90’ies vibe going on in this record (and that’s a plus), has a really high energy content and a sense of urgency which I really appreciate. It’s fast, relentless but also has the right amount of atmosphere and melodie to keep it catchy (maybe the wrong word with Black Metal but you catch my drift). Just listen to “Cleansing Fire” and you will concur about what I have written above.

The album starts with “To Wither Beneath Thy Radiance” and immediately sets the right tone. Great riffs are warped in your ears before the keyboards creep in. “De Ogen van de Dood zijn nooit Zielloos” remind me a bit of a toned down Obtained Enslavement and has interesting keys while having a hellish pace.

“Alles Vernietigende Leegte” really contain some great riffs and feels like a horde of demons are chasing for your very soul. “Cleansing Fire” is in the same vein but luckily, with the ambient intermezzo “Thy Radiance” there is some time to breathe before “Self Decimation” manages to pulverize my soul.

With “To whither beneath thy Radiance” Mories manages to strike again with eight excellent songs. This man oozes of creativity and is a musical genius mastering a multitude of genres. This album proves once again that he hasn’t lost its touch. The productions is solid and the artwork is fitting. If I could make two remarks it is the fact that the duration is relatively short and that it has digital drums. On the other hand, the duration makes sure that it never gets dull for one moment and I don’t mind digital drums since it can provide an extra dimension because its sterile sound.

So, I can only conclude that this is highly entertaining record which deserves an audience (as well as the label). Excellent stuff, go get yourself a copy as soon as possible!
