Italian power metal titans Frozen Crown are back with their fifth studio album “War Hearts”, and it’s nothing short of a triumph. Released under Napalm Records, this album showcases a band that has truly hit their stride, blending technical prowess, impeccable production, and unforgettable melodies to create what might just be their best work yet.
From the very first note, it’s clear that “War Hearts” is a meticulously crafted album. The production is stellar; every instrument is perfectly balanced, with nothing getting lost in the mix. The triple-guitar attack from Federico Mondelli, Fabiola Bellomo, and newcomer Alessia Lanzone forms the backbone of the album, creating a wall of sound that is both powerful and precise. And yet, despite the complexity of the arrangements, the mixing and mastering ensure that each instrument shines. Whether it’s the soaring vocals of Giada ‘Jade’ Etro or the thunderous drumming from Niso Tomasini, every element is given room to breathe, making this album a joy to listen to from start to finish.
While power metal can sometimes feel overwhelming with its bombastic arrangements, “War Hearts” strikes the perfect balance. The album never feels excessive, instead drawing the listener into each track with its carefully layered soundscapes. Standout tracks like the title track “War Hearts” and “Steel and Gold” exemplify this, with fast-paced riffs and melodic hooks that keep you engaged throughout. Jade Etro’s vocal performance is particularly noteworthy because her voice is both commanding and emotive, adding an extra layer of intensity to each track.
One of the true highlights of the album is the way Frozen Crown has managed to maintain the high-energy power metal sound they’re known for while also introducing enough variety to keep things fresh. While tracks like “I Am The Wind” bring a soaring, anthemic feel, songs like “Bloodlines” and “Edge of Reality” offer a darker, more narrative-driven experience. The storytelling throughout the album, referencing Highlander and Vampire: The Masquerade, adds an extra dimension to the music, making it more than just a collection of great songs, it’s an immersive experience.
It’s impossible to ignore the influence of power metal giants like Dragonforce on Frozen Crown’s sound, but with “War Hearts”, they are firmly establishing themselves as leaders in the genre. The comparison to Dragonforce is apt, especially with the album’s high-speed, technically complex guitar work. But where Frozen Crown truly shines is in their ability to balance the frenetic energy with melodic depth. Every new song feels like an invitation to lose yourself in the music, and the entire album is an exhilarating ride.
Despite the undeniable greatness of the album, I have heard from some early listeners that the high-octane pace of the majority of the album is a bit too much. For me though, this is what power metal is all about and this is quite frankly the perfect power metal album.
“War Hearts” is an exceptionally well-performed, well-produced, and well-balanced power metal album that is set to make Frozen Crown major contenders for the crown of the genre. Their technical skill, combined with the emotional power of the music, creates a listening experience that will resonate with fans both old and new. If you’re a fan of power metal, this album is a must-listen. This is a 10 out of 10 power metal album.
