If ever there was an album designed to transport listeners straight into the heart of a heroic 1980s fantasy adventure, Fellowship’s sophomore release, “The Skies Above Eternity,” is it. A jubilant blend of symphonic power metal, dazzling guitar theatrics, and anthemic choruses, this album delivers exactly what the genre promises; escapism, excitement, and just a touch of theatrical excess.
From the opening notes, it’s clear that Fellowship is not just dabbling in fantasy power metal; they live it. The influences of Blind Guardian, Helloween and Dragonforce are prominent, but the band adds their own flair by infusing the music with a sense of joyful exuberance. Tracks like “Victim” are standout examples, encapsulating everything that makes this album shine; galloping rhythms, triumphant choruses, and lyrics that explore themes of struggle and self-determination with a fantastical twist.
Vocalist Matthew Corry deserves special mention for his note-perfect delivery. His dynamic range effortlessly conveys both vulnerability and triumph, though at times, his diction can be a little murky. Still, the occasional lyrical stumble does little to detract from the sheer fun of the experience.
Musically, the band balances complexity with accessibility. The dual guitars of Brad Wosko and Sam Browne (the latter providing studio-only magic) weave intricate melodies, while the rhythm section with Ed Munson on bass and Callum Tuffen on drums, keeps everything driving forward with relentless energy. The production, handled by Rich Campbell and mixed by Alexander Backlund, ensures that every instrument has its space, avoiding the muddiness that sometimes plagues albums of this genre.
Thematically, “The Skies Above Eternity” explores hope, perseverance, and resistance against dark forces, both literal and metaphorical. Tracks like “The Bitter Winds” and “Dawnbreaker” are rich with imagery that evokes a world where heroes rise and fall, but never lose sight of their quest. This is music designed to inspire, whether you’re slaying dragons in your imagination or grinding through a tough day in reality.
Fellowship has delivered a near-perfect entry in the power metal canon. If they’re not already on the path to becoming global superstars, this album should be the spark that lights their way.
