A new year brings another 365 empty pages to fill with hopefully new memories, new oppurtunities and maybe new bands and music to discover. For me Enemy Inside is the first to start this new year of reviewing and discovering music.
Formed in 2017 in Aschaffenburg, Germany, the band with leading lady Nastassja Giulia describe themselves as a mix between dark rock and modern metal are about to release their third album ”Venom” on the 28th of February.
Starting the album with a banger of a guitar solo and some low singing parts of Giulia in ”Venom” really sets the bar high for this album. By switching to her normal singing voice during the chorus Giulia shows how divers she is. Leaving ”Venom” with a bang we go straight to ”Should Have Known Better” a song with some electronic pop like tones and a catchy chorus will be a perfect live crowd song.
Enemy Inside is famous for experimenting with musical ranges and genres. ”Sayonara” is the result of that talent. With some Japanese influence in the music and the Anime style video clip, the song really represents the powerfull message; That it is okay to be who you want to be and don’t let the haters get you down. This message combined with the powerful vocal range of Giulia ”Sayonara” really is a power track.
After the power of ”Sayonara” it is time to take a little step back with ”What We Used To Be”. This song was released on the 12th of July 2024 as debut song of the album. The beautifull voice of Giulia combined with the guitar riffs from Evan K, David Hadarick and Dominik Stotzem turned this song into a rockballad and gives us the courage to move on from relationships that are toxic. It is important to realise and accept that we change as a person. The song finish with a high note from Giulia.
And after releasing the pain of an ending relationship it is time to party. We are guided by some videogame sounds to ”Fuck That Party”. An uptempo song perfect for a live performance. We even hear an familiar voice during this song. Zak Tell from Clawfinger joines the band with some rap verses and turns this song into the perfect ”dance” number.
”Don’t Call Me An Angel” serves as a reminder of the tough battle that is called mental health. Giulia uses her wide range of vocals to switch between singing and growling, which sets the tone right for the song combined with the lyrics. This song will be a favorite by the fans because it has easy to catch lyrics and a melody that sticks with you from the very first minute.
The longest song of the album is ”Innocent” with a duration of 4:05 minutes. A good opportunity for the guitar players K, Hadarick and Stotzem to show their capabilities. There are some good switches between uptempo riffs and melodic riffs. Giulia shows her growling skills on full capacity in this song and ends with a scream that comes straight out of an exorcist movie.
We can find another collab on this album. This time we find Davey Suicide on ”I’d Rather Be Dead”. A pop like song with some electronic tones. Which makes the song fit into the Industrial Metal genre. We get to hear Davey Suicide after 3 minutes until the end of the song. So I believe that he not only sings with his collab but also influences the tone of the song.
After this song it is time for the last song of this album. ”Let Me Go” really feels like the cherry on top of the cake. The song is catchy because of the lyrics and the melody. The style from Davey Suicide which is more Nu Metal and Industrial Metal puts a heavy influence on this song in my opinion. It is different from the rest of the album but also fits perfectly with the band and their experiments.
With ”Venom” Enemy Inside really delivers a divers album with a huge range of songs with different genres. In my opinion you can not, not love this album because of the styles. The overall style of ”Venom” is different from ”Phoenix” or ”Seven” (the other albums from the band). ”Venom” is a bit darker, more mature and shows of the power that the band has.
The experimenting with ranges and genres really pays of for this band and surprises you with every new release.
