Slovenia is mostly known for Laibach, Folk music and their capital Ljubljana. But there are also some Extreme Metal bands in this beautiful country. Void Wanderer Productions ventured further in the unknown (at least for me) and found the Black Metal band Cvinger. Already active fourteen years they already have released two full lengths, an EP and a demo. “Rites ov Flesh”, which is my initial introduction, proves to be a pleasant one. Well, pleasant isn’t the right word but lets say an intriguing one.
Their fourth release (yes I missed the previous three) is a dark one. It explores themes of spiritual sacrifise, visualization. Musically we can aspect Back/Death metal with a pinch of Thrash Metal in it. It starts with an ominous “Intro” which creates an unsettling atmosphere paving the way of the rites displayed within the songs (nine of them, to be exactly). The album is immersive, visceral and haunting. Especially when clean choral passages are used. It only gives extra emphasis to the occult setting. The combination of clean chants and grunts/screams in combination with venomous riffs pays off giving it both a mystical and powerful experience.
This album feels authentic and breaths mysticism. The vocals can be a bit hard to digest. But frankly, when getting used to it only enhances the occult atmosphere. I must warn you: this album isn’t an easy journey. It takes more than a few spins in order to grasp the spiritual madness provided. It can be a bit uncomfortable at times. Mainly because of the vocals and dark atmosphere. But please do not be afraid. Listening pays off and eventually you will appreciate what is being offered. If not, this album just isn’t your cup of black tea. In my humble opinion, your patience will be rewarded in the end although this album is best devoured listening alone, in the dark while candles are burning fiercely.
The production is dirty, raw and fitting. Musically, this journey is well crafted and concocted. I sense the members of Cvinger where in trance when creating this album. Standing near the abyss, creating a cohesive, dark, introspective and utterly destructive piece of art. Sometimes reviewing can be so rewarding. Escpecially when discovering new music hailing from all parts of the world.and with “Rites ov Flesh” this is also the case. Just listen to “Rite II- The Temple of Nine Gates” or “To Call Upon the Bog Spirit” and get immersed in this dark journey. The artwork has some beautiful details and really fits with the music.
As said, this album is not for the easy listener, but recommended for devotees who want an experience….not mere music. Please lend this music your ears and help both Void Wanderer Productions and Cvinger spreading their gospel. They certainly deserve it. Good and highly entertaining (with lack of better words) stuff!
