Cradle Of Filth – The screaming of the Valkyries

Active for 34 years UK’s most foremost Extreme Gothic Metal outfit Cradle of Filth has managed to have quite an astonishing discography. Not counting live albums, EP’s, remastered albums, etc. this March their fourteenth! album will be spawned upon mankind.

With a (reasonably) stable line-up and aided with excellent live performances Dani Filth and his comrades manage to enthrall metalheads, goths, horror fanatics and other vermin with their signature sound. Ever since “Hammer of the Witches” (2015) it seems like Cradle of Filth is rejuvenated. The fire burns fierce in their ranks and “The screaming of the Valkyries” is no exception.

But one thing is lacking. For a few years Dani has been talking excessively about a collaboration with Ed Sheeran (both lads come from the same town, Ipswich). He stated that this song was going to be released soon. But unfortunately, nothing can be found on their newest album. I suspect this collaboration doesn’t fit with the material on this album or it would be too much of a gimmick on this full length. Who knows? But to be honest, me (and especially my beloved girlfriend) were very curious what this collaboration would sound like. Now, we are left in the dark and hope that this collaboration will be released very soon (albeit as a single or whatever).

But enough complaining because The screaming of the Valkyries is a very good and entertaining record. Cradle Of Filth are still on top of their game. Does it bring anything new? No. Does it matter? Frankly, no because you know what to expect with this band. And that means gothic and horror themes, loads of atmosphere, orchestral keyboards, heavenly voices and crafty (heavy) guitar (solos) which balance between Thrash, Black, Death and sometimes even Heavy metal.

The album starts with “To Live Deliciously” which also recently has been released as a video. An aggressive song with trashy guitars which shows the “in your face” side of Cradle of Filth. Drummer Marthus, who truly is a great drummer, holds no punches while Daniel (bass) Ashok and newcomer Donny on guitars make sure there are some harsh tunes and well dosed guitar solos in this song. And don’t forget Dani’s signature vocals: he still screams, grunts, moans and whispers like the olden days.

“Demagoguery” also is quite an aggressive Gothic anthem with excellent guitar solo while “The Trinity of Shadows” has a really cool chorus and is fast and fierce as a night breed creature on fire. “White Hellebore” is relentless but also makes sure that the keyboards and voice of Zoe Marie Federoff can shine. It is a beauty and the beast-like number which is utterly enjoyable. Unfortunately, “You are My Nautilus” shifts to much in different directions missing its mark.

“Non Omnis Moriar” (roughly translates as: I will not wholly die) provides a perfect breather and contains loads of atmosphere while not forgetting heavy guitars.

You already must be acquainted with the video “Malignant Perfection”. This song captivates Cradle of Filth perfectly: a catchy yet powerful Gothic Metal anthem where the diversity of Dani’s voice excels and guitar, keyboard and the lovely voice of Zoe Marie Federoff make sure you are on the edge of your seat enjoying all facets of this powerful song. But when this song holds its throttle, it truly shines with its gloomy atmosphere. It reminds me somewhat of “Her Ghost in the Fog” from the Midian album.

“Ex Sanguine Draculae” and ending track “When Misery Was a Stranger” rekindles with the old era of this band. The typical symphonic bombast, while still having that fresh trash-sound, reminds Dusk and her Embrace and delivers a chilling end to this album.

I thoroughly enjoyed this album. As said: Cradle of Filth offers nothing new in their discography. That doesn’t hinder one bid. This band is a household name for Extreme Gothic Metal and in some parts even go back to their filthiest early days when they were considered Black Metal. Their formula still hasn’t lost its potency and that says something.

And with good production and superb artwork “The Screaming of the Valkyries” is another solid addition to their excellent discography. Dani and his filthlings are still going strong so check this album out. And if you have the chance to see these lads live go for it! I have seen them live countless times and they never disappoint.
