Bizarrekvlt – Alt Som Finnes

I usually like my Black Metal as a dirty needle at a junkies’ arm in a slum somewhere, so releases and bands that are mostly on the melodic side of things, sometimes slip through. Such is the case with Bizarrekult, from Norway. They never once were on my radar, and so previous albums have gone unnoticed for me, yet it changes with “Alt Som Finnes”.

The album opens up with “Hun” and the first minute or so reminded me heavily of the French quartet Alcest, which will be a recurring influence in this album, turning it into cleanly-made piece of modern Black Metal, that sees its atmosphere as if it’s lingering on dark, nightly cityscapes while pondering about life, rather than themes like hell, nun raping and whatnot. Good thing? Bad? I haven’t decided yet. I just know it’s a refreshment.
The song moves away from those French-made moments and dives into an aggressive tone, controlled by harsh vocals and a menacing double bass.

In well “post” -Black Metal manner, “Blikket Hennes” is controlled by sad, distant-sounding riffs that manage to balance out the more aggressive tone, while transition after transition eventually leads the listener to a solo led moment that is not only definitely headbanging worthy, but also throws clean vocals into the mix, which don’t weigh the song down.

Some tracks are faster than others, making the quick fire “Avmakt” and the relaxed “Håp” opposites, yet each showcases a different ability in the band’s arsenal, even incorporating soft, female vocals to lead, a feat that comes back with background female vocals as well, from the house of Predatory Void where she also commands the singing front.
A second thing that catches the ear right away with the album, is how clean the production is and how well it serves the atmosphere the album is trying to neatly lay, like a blanket of sorrow. Even this alone turns the album into an easier-to-digest piece, yet if it’s negative or positive would be for each listener to decide.

Bleak melodies continue well into the album, as songs such as “Aversjon” or “Tomhet”, that also include another guest vocalist, from the Danish Møl, who are also situated deep in the Post-Metal/Shoegaze scene.

“Alt Som Finnes” isn’t a bad album at all and it will surely hit most of the right spots with fans of the genre, it’s just that it sometimes fails to really shine through, thus doesn’t manage to separate itself from the rest of the scene he came out of.
