30-06-2013 – On Tuska Open Air (Helsinki) we met up with Floor Jansen before her show with Nightwish. We talked about her involvement with this band and the new album of ReVamp, Wild Card. Read the interview below! The Dutch translation can be found at the bottom of the page.

How would you describe your time with Nightwish?
It’s been great, wonderful. Who gets the opportunity to do this? I am very aware of the remarkable opportunity that I have been given, but at the same time it comes quite natural. All of us have the same goal and the same work mentality. I shouldn’t dwell on the magnitude of everything, because I’ll get a bit overwhelmed.

You probably had to adapt some Nightwish songs to your own voice, how did you do that?
I didn’t get a lot of time to do that. Which is probably a good thing. There wasn’t time for me to experiment with the vocals. The only thing they said to me was: not too much operatic vocals. That period of the band is over. I don’t even sing the old songs in my operatic voice. Many people think my interpretation of the songs is a mix between Tarja and Anette, which they see as a positive thing. But I think I have given the songs a personal touch over time. Ghost Love Score is my favorite to sing.

How do the fans react?
Very positively. In the past, the changing of singers in this band has been accompanied with a lot of comments. For some reason, fans really like me as the singer. They are happy with the vibe I bring and the interpretation I give to the songs. Many people want me to stay.

Do you want to stay?
I would love to. The way things are now, it would be possible. The last show of Nightwish is on the 11th of August and the album of ReVamp will be released on August 23rd. Nightwish will have a break of a few months and ReVamp will be touring. Nobody knows what will happen after that. Decisions will be made next year, so that’s very exitcing. Nightwish does have a rehearsal/studio space for July, August and September, so there will be a new album. But I do not know if I will be a part of that.

With ReVamp you started a crowd funding campaign for a tour. You’d think Nuclear Blast has the financial capability for such an enterprise.
Indeed, that’s what you’d think. But due to decrease in CD sales, the record company has much less money to spend. There is money, but that is for recording and video clips. Even if Nuclear Blast would do a tour proposal, the money of that is recoupable. That means that the band has to recoup it by selling albums. This basically means you pay for the tour yourself and that you never see any money from the record sales. That would not be much of a problem, but we have to pay for a living as well. Many fans liked to be involved with this project and understood that there are not much financial means available. If people would stop free downloading, the problem would be solved and there would be no need for a crowd funding project.

I am not opposed to downloading, but you have to pay for it. It costs money to produce an album. A record is not a free item. I think it is unbelievable that there are no regulations for this. You see the entire industry collapse slowly.

The name of the new ReVamp record is Wild Card, can you explain that?
I always find it hard to describe an album in one word or sentence. Wild Card means something as a unforeseen, burning factor. It fits with the album because you don’t know what the next song brings. So musically it is a wild card. Also, it is the title of a song.

There is no theme in the album. I had my say about my break down in the three songs The Anatomy of A Nervous Breakdown, each from a different perspective. The song Wolf and Dog is about something else. The balance between the performer/career side of me that goes ‘hunting’ (wolf) and the dog that wants to be safe and comfortable at home. Those two sides are opposite of each other in my world.

Musically, the album is heavier. It is more riff-orientated, more variation in vocals and more playing with the orchestration. The record is written with the other band members, mainly guitarist Jord Otto and keyboard player Ruben Wijga, me and Joost van den Broek as guardian of the process. On the first record I also wrote the music, now I mainly did the vocal lines and lyrics. There are some guest musicians. Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion) and Daniel de Jongh (Textures) sing with me in the choir. Devin Townsend sings on Neurasthenia and Mark Jansen (Epica) grunts on Misery’s No Crime. I did all the other grunts myself.

You’ve been out of the game for some time due to a burn out and now you are active again with both Nightwish and ReVamp. So can we conclude that you are all better now?
Yes I am. I can really feel the difference compared to the past years. I also know why I got the burn out and the things I do with Nightwish are not related to that at all. I am a good singer and songwriter, put me on stage and I feel right at home. But don’t let me do management of financial business. I can do it, but it costs too much energy. That was the cause of my break down. Now I know where I want to put my energy in. I take a weekend off now and then, try to avoid things that have a negative energy and I do things differently. I’ll never let my health come second again. You won’t enjoy anything when having a break down. I couldn’t even sing for more than half a year.

Hoe zou je de periode met Nightwish omschrijven?
Als geweldig, wonderlijk bijna. Wie krijgt nou de kans om dit te doen? Ik ben heel bewust van deze kans, maar tegelijkertijd gaat het ook heel natuurlijk. We hebben allemaal hetzelfde doel voor ogen en dezelfde werkmentaliteit. Ik moet er niet te lang bij stilstaan hoe groot dit allemaal is, dan voel ik mij een beetje overdonderd.

Moest je de Nightwish nummers op je eigen stem aanpassen? En hoe heb je dat aangepakt?
Ik kreeg weinig tijd om met de nummers te experimenteren, dat is misschien maar goed ook. Ze wilden alleen niet teveel opera. Die periode van de band is voorbij. Ook de oude nummers zing ik niet in mijn operastem. Veel mensen vinden dat ik een mix maak tussen Tarja en Anette en dat zien zij als positief. Ik denk dat ik er inmiddels ook wel mijn eigen draai aan heb gegeven. Dat was niet tijdens de eerste show al zo, het moest een beetje groeien. Ghost Love Score is mijn favoriet om te zingen.

Hoe reageren de fans?
Heel positief. Het wisselen van zangeres ging in het verleden van deze band met veel commentaar gepaard. Om een of andere reden zijn mensen heel blij met mij. Ze zijn blij met de vibe die ik breng en de interpretatie die ik aan de nummers geef. Veel fans willen ook dat ik blijf.

Wil je ook blijven?
Ik zou graag willen blijven. Zoals het er nu uitziet zou het ook wel kunnen. De laatste show van Nightwish is op 11 augustus en het album van ReVamp komt de 23ste uit. Dan stopt Nightwish een paar maanden en ga ik touren met ReVamp. Hoe dan verder weten we allemaal nog niet. De echte besluiten worden pas volgend jaar genomen, dus dat is wel spannend. Nightwish heeft wel een repitie/studioruimte gepland in juli, augustus en september. Er komt dus een nieuw album, maar of ik daaraan meewerk weet ik nog niet.

Met ReVamp startte je een crowdfunding campaign voor een tour. Je zou toch denken dat een label als Nuclear Blast dat wel zou kunnen financieren.
Dat zou je denken, maar sinds de cdverkoop zover is teruggelopen, heeft een platenmaatschappij ook veel minder te besteden. Het meeste geld gaat naar opnames en videoclips. Als Nuclear Blast al met een voorstel voor een tour zou komen, moet de band het geld terugverdienen met de verkoop van albums. Je betaalt dus eigenlijk zelf. Je ziet het geld van je album nooit terug. Dat is op zich niet erg, behalve dan dat bij ons de schoorsteen ook moet roken.
Veel fans vonden het tof om bij het project betrokken te worden en ze begrepen dat er niet zoveel financiële middelen waren. Als mensen zouden ophouden met gratis downloaden was het probleem opgelost en hoefden wij geen crowdfunding project te starten.

Downloaden vind ik prima, maar je moet er wel voor betalen. Het produceren van het album heeft mij ook geld gekost. Het is geen gratis item. Ongelofelijk dat er geen betere aanpak is tegen het gratis downloaden. Je ziet de hele industrie steeds verder in elkaar zakken.

Het nieuwe album heet Wild Card, hoe kom je aan die naam?
Ik vind het altijd moeilijk om een album in een woord of een zin te vatten. Wild Card betekent eigenlijk zoiets als een onvoorziene, brandende factor. Muzikaal gezien is het een wild card aangezien je niet weet wat het volgende nummer brengt.

Er is geen overkoepelend thema. Ik heb wel gif willen spuien over mijn burn out, wat resulteerde in The Anatomy of A Nervous Breakdown. Drie nummers gaan daarover, steeds vanuit een andere invalshoek.
Het nummer Wolf and Dog gaat over iets heel anders. De wolf is de performer, de carrierekant van mij, die op jacht gaat en de hond wil graag op de bank zitten en geaaid worden. Het veilige huiselijke zeg maar. Die twee werelden staan bij mij lijnrecht tegenover elkaar.

Muzikaal gezien is de plaat heftiger. Meer riff-georiënteerd, meer variatie in de zang en we hebben meer gespeeld met het orchestrale. De nummers zijn voornamelijk geschreven door Jord Otto, een van de gitaristen, de toetsenist Ruben Wijga en ik. Joost van den Broek was erbij als bewaker van het proces. Waar ik bij het eerste album ook instrumentaal dingen aanleverde, heb ik dat nu niet gedaan. Ik schreef vooral de zanglijnen en de tekst. Er doen ook een aantal gastmuzikanten mee. Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion) en Daniel de Jongh (Textures) zingen samen met mij in het koor. Devin Townsend zingt op Neurasthenia en Mark Jansen (Epica) grunt op Misery’s No Crime. De rest van de grunts doe ik zelf.

Je bent een tijd uit de running geweest vanwege een burn out. Nu doe je zowel dingen met Nightwish als ReVamp. Kunnen wij daaruit concluderen dat je helemaal beter bent?
Jazeker. Het verschil met voorgaande jaren is duidelijk voelbaar. Ik weet gelukkig waar ik de burn out van gekregen heb. De dingen die ik met Nightwish doe zijn daar geen onderdeel van.
Ik ben een goede zangeres en een goede songwriter. Zet mij op het podium en ik ben als een vis in het water. Maar laat mij geen management- of financiële zaken regelen. Ik kan het wel, maar het kost zoveel energie. Dat was ook de oorzaak. Teveel verschillende petten en altijd maar doorgaan. Nu weet ik waar ik mijn energie wel en niet wil in steken. Ik neem ongegeneerd een weekend vrij, vermijd dingen met negatieve energie en pak dingen anders aan. Mijn gezondheid zal nooit meer op de tweede plaats komen. Tijdens zo’n break down vind je niks meer leuk. Ik kon niet eens meer zingen, meer dan een half jaar niet.
