When I arrived at the Baroeg at the time the doors were about to open, there were only five people waiting in front of it. I was staring to get afraid that there wouldn’t be much people going to this gig, but fortunately lots of people showed up after the doors opened. Black Metal on a Sunday afternoon isn’t very common, but it seems it didn’t stop the fans this day. After a while the first band, Svarttjern, started to play. It’s been about a year since I’ve seen this band and I remember being impressed about them the last time. This day I was again reminded of the reason whý I was impressed that time. Svarttjern is the typical Norwegian Black Metal band, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. A great show they gave us, and they were a fantastic opening band. Completed with the corpse paint, the upside-down crosses, and way too long spikes around their arms, Svarttjern showed us what black metal is all about. Of course it had to be mentioned that we were at a black metal gig and had to hail Satan, and fuck of all the Christians that were in church at that time.

Next band to play was Sarkom, also a black metal band from Norway. It was the first time that I was seeing this band perform live. Though they played good, I was less convinced by this band, than I was by Svarttjern. I really like Sarkom, but I expected a bit more of them on stage. The singer of the band, Unsgaard, looked a bit drunk, and as soon as Niklas Kvarforth from Shining went on stage for a guest performance when the band started to play a Darkthrone cover (In The Shadow Of The Horns) he overruled the singer of Sarkom. Nevertheless this too was a great show.

Headliner of this tour is Swedisch band Shining. I decided not to stand too far in the front, since you never know what singer Kvarforth is up to when he’s on stage. But it seems that he indeed is calmed down a bit lately. The shows aren’t about cutting yourself anymore, and I only saw him put out a cigarette on his arm once. Since their former bass player quit the band, the homoerotic kisses and acts on stage are also less. Besides all this happening Shining played a good gig. They mostly played the newer songs, including some from their upcoming album which will be released later this year. After playing their last song, and also my personal favourite, Låt Oss Ta Allt Från Varandra, the show was over. But it seemed that their fans wanted more, so after a lot of screaming from the audience, the band actually came back to play a bit more. Though we had already heard this song earlier, it didn’t seem to stop the enthusiastic fans. And of course Niklas wouldn’t be Niklas if he had to shock us at least one time. Armed with a bottle of Jack Daniëls, he tried to puke over the front row. Unfortunately for him, the Jack Daniëls decided to stay as much a possible inside his body.
So after this typical ending of a Shining show, the day was over already, even though it was just 7.30 p.m. It was a great concert, and all three band played good. A perfect way to survive a hangover Sunday!
